In one of the games of the weekend in the Championship, Aston Villa host rivals West Bromwich Albion needing a win to keep their play-off hopes alive.

The Baggies, however, know a win is just as important for their chances of closing the gap on the top two and still being in with a shout of automatic promotion.

Dean Smith’s men fell to a late defeat at Griffin Park on Wednesday evening going down 1-0 to Brentford.

Darren Moore’s outfit, meanwhile, twice came back from going behind to snatch a point against Martin O’Neill’s Nottingham Forest.

The Baggies have lost once in their last six away matches, winning five of them.

Villa meanwhile, have one win in their last six matches and have only won one of their last six games on their own soil.

Ahead of the match, Sky Sports enlisted the guesswork of David Prutton as he offered his thoughts on the outcome of this particular fixture.

The pundit said:

“It would have hurt Dean Smith a lot to be beaten on his return to Griffin Park in midweek, but he needs to move on quickly and focus on Saturday.

“West Brom got a fortunate draw against Nottingham Forest but they need to get on a winning run if they are to push up and threaten the top two.

“This will be a tight game but I reckon the Baggies will nick the three points, 1-2.”

The verdict

West Brom narrowly avoided defeat courtesy of a late penalty in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Villa fell to an even later defeat to Brentford during the week, so neither side is coming into this game in top form.

Dwight Gayle is banned for two games having been done for conning referee Lee Mason.

So, I feel that gives the hosts an incredibly slim advantage.

David Prutton is going for a 2-1 away win.

For me, it has to be that scoreline too – but in favour of the hosts.
