Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has claimed that if Coventry City secure promotion to the Championship later this season, it will be a phenomenal achievement given their current situation.

The Sky Blues have been forced to play their home games at St Andrew's this season after failing to agree a deal with the rugby side Wasps to stay at the Ricoh Arena last summer.

Despite their off-the-field issues, Coventry have excelled in League One under the guidance of manager Mark Robins and currently lead the way in the division.

After promotion rivals Rotherham United were held to a 1-1 draw by Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday, the Sky Blues leapfrogged them in the third-tier standings by beating Sunderland.

Matt Godden scored what turned to be the winner in the second minute of the aforementioned clash on Sunday as he fired past Black Cats goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

Given that Coventry now hold a five point advantage over third-place Portsmouth, they are unquestionably in a fantastic position to seal a return to the Championship in May.

Speaking to the Sky Sport EFL Podcast after the Sky Blues' latest triumph, Prutton said: "I think given the exterior chatter that goes on around Coventry which has been the case for some time, it's nice that we're sat here talking about their ability on a football pitch and what they can do the opposition.

"If they get themselves up automatically, it would be a phenomenal achievement for a team that it still technically homeless."

The Verdict

When you consider that Coventry have managed to make St Andrew's somewhat of a fortress this season by winning 11 of 17 home league games this season, it would be somewhat of a shock if they do not push on in the coming weeks in the third-tier.

Set to face Ipswich Town on Saturday, the Sky Blues could send out a real signal of intent to the rest of the division by producing an eye-catching display at Portman Road.

Providing that they are able to maintain their consistency between now and the end of the season, Coventry will have a fantastic chance of winning the League One title.

When you consider that the Sky Blues were in the fourth-tier two years ago, a return to the Championship would represent a remarkable turnaround for the club.
