Former Leeds United midfielder David Prutton has insisted that the Whites need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they to achieve their goals of promotion this season.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have made a positive start to the Sky Bet Championship campaign, winning four of their first six league games and occupying third spot in the league table.

But the Whites succumbed to their first defeat of the season at the weekend, losing 1-0 to Swansea City at Elland Road after Wayne Routledge's 90th minute strike.

It was an afternoon where Leeds squandered plenty of chances in front of goal and were ultimately paid to pay, and their ability to create chances and put them away at home has emerged as a talking point amongst fans.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Prutton has insisted that Leeds need to become more ruthless in front of goal if they are to win promotion this term. He said: "Will it ultimately again cost them promotion? I’d like to think not."

"It’s easy for us to just sit here and say ‘just convert your chances’ but success in elite football is determined by the people that can score goals and the people that can’t score goals, so they have just got to absolutely make sure that they learn from this.

"The amount of shots that they had and the number of chances they created are all very positive things but fundamentally it doesn’t matter unless you get the ball in the net and that’s what head coach Marcelo Bielsa will be ramming into his players when it comes to training and with what players he has got left during this international break."

Leeds make the short trip to Barnsley after a short international break, where Bielsa's side will be looking to get back to winning ways after a disappointing weekend last time out.

The Verdict

Away from home, Leeds create plenty of chances and score a load of goals, but at Elland Road they tend to struggle for some reason.

Huge expectations are placed upon Bielsa's side when they play in front of their home crowd, and they need to get better if they are to have a successful season.

It isn't anything to worry about too much, though, especially with Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa still yet to start from the off.
