Birmingham City host Queens Park Rangers, looking to build on their 3-2 win at Reading on Saturday which saw them move to within four points of the play-offs, while QPR will be looking to continue the momentum picked up from their 2-0 success against Preston.

The win at Reading ended a five-match winless run and also saw Pep Clotet secure his first three points since he was made the club’s permanent head coach, while it was also just a third win of the campaign for Birmingham away from St Andrews.

QPR, meanwhile, managed to record their first clean sheet in 20 Championship matches against Preston on Saturday, which also saw them end a seven-match winless run that had seen them slide down the table and lose some momentum from a promising start to the season.

The two clubs head into the match level 28 points and separated by just three goals, with Birmingham in 13th and QPR in 14th place in a congested mid table, meaning a win for either side could lift them up a few places and into the top half of the Championship table.

Birmingham City through the decade: How much do you remember about the 2010/11 season?

So far this campaign Birmingham have picked up five of their eight wins at St Andrews but they are winless in their last two games on home soil since beating Luton Town 2-1 at the end of October, while QPR are winless in three matches on their travels since beating Hull City 3-2.

A ever Sky Sports EFL pundit David Prutton has provided his latest round of predictions ahead of the midweek Championship matches, and he has suggested that Birmingham could secure back to back victories against QPR on Wednesday.

Speaking to Sky sports the EFL expert said: “After a long spell as caretaker boss, Pep Clotet was finally appointed by Birmingham on a permanent basis last week and he marked the occasion with a thrilling 3-2 win away at Reading.

They'd drawn far too many games leading up to that and he'll be hoping it's something for them to build on.”

Prutton has backed the Blues to secure a 2-1 victory, which would see Clotet’s side potentially close the gap on the teams above them in the table and leave them in the top half of the league heading into the festive period.

The Verdict

Prutton has made a fairly sensible prediction here, with the Blues a difficult opponent to face at St Andrews for most sides in the division and most of Birmingham’s matches at home so far this season have been tight contests decided by the odd goal.

Given QPR’s poor defensive record you can certainly understand why Prutton is backing the Blues, who registered three at Reading at the weekend, to score a couple of goals on Wednesday night and that could be the difference for the Blues.
