Derby County are considering a move for free agent forward David McGoldrick, as per YorkshireLive, after the journeyman reached the expiration of his contract at Sheffield United this summer.

The 34-year-old netted a very respectable eight goals as the Blades finished rock bottom of the Premier League in 2020/21, and he was heavily involved for the Blades last term before an untimely injury ruled him out of the final third of the campaign.

Two goals and four assists in just nine league starts demonstrated that McGoldrick still has what it takes to contribute in the Championship, having always been a striker better known for his all-round game rather than goalscoring, and therefore he would be a statement addition in the third tier in this transfer window.

Is it a good potential move?

Definitely.

If McGoldrick can prove his fitness with the Rams in the opening few months of the season, he has the skill and intelligence to have huge influence on games at League One level.

The 34-year-old was never blessed with great pace in the prime of his career, therefore his clever movement and close control should still be equally as effective, and arguably even more so with the step down a division.

Would he start?

Jack Stretton, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Tom Barkhuizen are the only forwards present at Derby at the moment, meaning that McGoldrick would be a marquee signing at this stage of the transfer window.

McGoldrick would certainly take his place in the starting XI, and would expect to do so if he moves to a second tier club, but amongst that contingent he would be arguably Liam Rosenior's most dangerous frontman.

What does he offer?

The Nottingham-born striker's intelligence and awareness is clear to see when watching him play.

McGoldrick uses his body very well, though he is not physically intimidating and can find pockets of space to receive possession on the half turn.

The 34-year-old caused tonnes of problems for Premier League defences as recently as the season before last, and therefore in League One he would be one of the most potent forces around.
