Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell has sounded a warning to his contract rebels, claiming he won't settle for his side being a second choice.

The Railwaymen finished just outside the top seven this season, but with a strong youth set up and a great home record, they're likely to be challenging next season.

Despite that, Artell won't be held to ransom by those players he's offered new deals to. George Ray, Jordan Bowery and Ben Garratt have all been offered new deals but as yet, they haven't put pen to paper.

That's prompted Artell to send a clear message on Cheshire Live: “I don’t want any player at this club to think we are second choice," he said.

"I understand when we offer a contract they are going to see what’s in the market and I respect that. There has to be a courtship, and there are different ways for different players and agents.

“I’d never allow it to go into July like it has in the past, or I’d never have that intention. That’s not good for anyone."

Paul Green, Nicky Hunt, Michael Raynes, Alex Nicholls, Oliver Finney and Dave Richards are all also out of contract with unclear futures.

Artell's words echo those of Swindon Town boss Ritchie Wellens, who has also told his contract rebels to put pen to paper or look elsewhere.

The Verdict

In a summer where there's likely to be more players on the market than clubs on the hunt, those with deals in front of them might be wise to get the pens out sooner, rather than later.

Artell's Crewe have been tough to beat and progressed through the season to become a strong side. They're likely to be challenging the top seven last year and any player wanting out now might miss a special season.
