David Artell cannot wait for the season the get underway, with the return of Crewe's supporters heightening the atmosphere at the Mornflake Stadium, he told the club's website.

Artell steered the Railwaymen to a top half finish in their first season in League One following promotion last term, and the former Gibraltar international is hoping the support from the stands can spur them on to an even greater return.

He said: "It will be terrific to have the fans back. That is what you want and as a manager and player you want to be a part of that.

"They bring that emotion and passion and that is what you need. You want to hear that roar when a goal is scored and have them in your corner."

Crewe play host to newly promoted Cheltenham Town, a side who finished just two places behind them when they finished second in the fourth tier in the 2019/20 season. A strong core of academy graduates has built the foundations to their success in the last couple of seasons, Artell believes his team can thrive with the pressure of expectation back in the stadium.

He continued: "Football needs those atmospheres and we cannot wait to have them back, especially when the competitive games start again. It has made a difference to have them there in pre-season. You could see that at the Stoke game with 3,500 inside the ground and the tempo it created.

"It makes a massive difference. The players thrive off it. Some of them need that noise and emotion to get the very best out of their performances and it took a bit of getting used to when they weren’t there in the stadiums."

Artell has not taken as much praise as fellow up and coming managers in League One, despite finishing above Ryan Lowe's Plymouth Argyle and Russell Martin's Milton Keynes Dons last season. That will not stop him quietly plugging away and extending the tremendous job he has done with the Railwaymen.

The Verdict

It is going to be interesting to see how the return of fans affects certain teams and home advantage.

Crewe had the ninth best home record in League One last term compared to 13th away, so they still performed better in an empty Mornflake, with the support returning properly for the first time since gaining League Two automatic promotion, via points per game, the squad should be able to kick on for another successful campaign.

With Perry Ng, Harry Pickering and Ryan Wintle all departing the club in the last year it will be important the club stabilise in the third tier once more this season, they certainly have the ability on and off the pitch to at least achieve that.
