Derby County's season has been one full of ups and downs.

As for the second year in a row they have fallen from top spot and almost out of the promotion race altogether.

After owner Mel Morris invested a heft amount of money in the squad, many fans expected automatic promotion, however it doesn't look as if that will be the case.

Manager Paul Clement was sacked in February after the majority of supporters were unhappy with the style of play the team was playing, with owner Morris claiming that it wasn't the 'Derby way'.

There's no doubt that there is a lot of talent in the Derby squad, with all 9 of the Rams' summer signings having Premier League experience. Derby broke their record transfer fee twice last summer, when they brought in Tom Ince and Bradley Johnson.

Derby are currently 5th in the league table, 7 points clear of 7th placed Cardiff, the pressure is on the players to finish in the top six with fans dreading a repeat of last season's ending.

Cyrus Christie

Cyrus ChristieCyrus Christie

Cyrus Christie has played in the majority of games for the Rams this season, and has become one of the best right backs in the Championship since joining the Rams from Coventry in 2014.

Christie brings pace and skill to the Derby side as well as an excellent dribbling ability, these are important to the team as the fans demand attractive attacking football.

Despite his talent, he was dropped from the starting line up in Derby's win over rivals Nottingham Forest, as well as their defeat at Cardiff, with youngster Jamie Hanson playing right back for those games. Christie should start every game from now on, as he is the only player in the Derby squad who is a natural right back.

Johnny Russell

Johnny RussellJohnny Russell

Russell is a great winger, who can score and create goals.

The Scotsman has scored 7 goals this season, two of which coming in the 4-1 win over Bolton this weekend.

Johnny Russell hasn't been consistently in the first team, with Bradley Johnson playing in the wing position in recent weeks, forcing Russell to the bench. But when Russell is in the team he usually makes a difference.

Derby have some important games coming up as they hope to confirm their play-off place, and Johnny Russell must play as his talent and work rate can help carry Derby over the line.

Craig Bryson

Craig BrysonCraig Bryson

Craig Bryson hasn't played much football for Derby this season, after picking up an injury at Bolton on the opening day, he was ruled out until late October, but then suffered a setback, meaning he didn't properly get back into the side until February.

Bryson has only scored twice this season in 17 appearances, but like Johnny Russell, his work rate and ability to create chances is crucial to the team.

Craig Bryson is another player that, when in form, can carry the team to victory. Derby will need his midfield capabilities if they are to make a top six finish.
