Darren Moore is going to appeal the red card shown to striker Jay Rodriguez during their 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

Rodriguez was sent of for an innocuous looking challenge on Owls' striker Marco Matias, but referee Andy Davies immediately flashed a red card. It seems a harsh decision, although the referee had a clear view of the incident.

Moore, whose side missed a chance to close the gap on Norwich and Leeds, has seen the replay back and is keen to try to clear his player's name.

“I’ve looked at the video footage and it’s something I would like to carry forward as a club and ask the officials to look into,” Moore told Birmingham Live. “It looked a nothing incident, while I can understand in the heat of the moment and quickness of play you might see it a different way."

“From my angle and different video footage, we can be a bit more clearer. But I’d like to appeal it because it’s a straight red and carries a three-game ban.”

The three match ban could be hugely detrimental to the Baggies, who already have Dwight Gayle out injured for the upcoming fixtures.

With Leeds and Norwich losing yesterday, they missed a great chance to strengthen their own Premier League ambitions, but won't want to suffer further with Rodriguez's absence if it can be helped.

The Verdict

I can't see a red card offence in the challenge, but the FA do like to back their officials and if there's any doubt at all, they'll keep the card in place. It's tough for the FA, they have to back referees, but there's a point when mistakes have to be acknowledged.

When promotion to the Premier League is worth £200m, decisions have to be spot on. This one wasn't.
