West Brom are set to appoint Gary Walsh as their new goalkeeping coach after they lost Neil Cutler to Aston Villa.

Cutler swapped The Hawthorns for Villa Park following Dean Smith's appointment and he actually replaced Walsh, who had previously worked for Villa.

As Express & Star journalist Matt Maher, who revealed the news, points out, it means the pair have effectively swapped jobs over the past three months.

It also means that Walsh, who knows Baggies boss Darren Moore from their playing days, will be working with Sam Johnstone again.

The former Manchester United man was on loan at Villa last season and earned serious praise for his performances in Steve Bruce's side.

However, they suffered play-off final heartbreak and he returned to the Red Devils before Albion completed a permanent deal for the stopper in the summer.

Therefore, the news is sure to go down very well with the 25-year-old, who has been an ever-present in goal for West Brom in the league this season.

The other goalkeepers at the club include Boaz Myhill and Jonathan Bond.

The Verdict

This is a strange scenario but these things happen in football and it does seem a very good move from Albion.

Firstly, because Walsh knows the manager and it's vital Moore works with people he trusts, and he also knows Johnstone.

He clearly did a great job with him last season and he will hope he can help the talented keeper once again in this campaign.
