Sheffield Wednesday have already got to work on improving their side this summer and have managed to add David Stockdale to their ranks in goal amongst other names.

The Owls came close to a promotion straight back to the Championship from League One last season but couldn't quite get over the finish line. Now, Darren Moore has begun his recruitment as he looks to get his squad ready for a potential title tilt.

With Stockdale added to the side, it presents the question of who will start inbetween the sticks at Hillsborough going forward.

Speaking to the club's official website though, Moore has revealed that it isn't yet clear-cut as to who will have the gloves when the new season starts. That's because despite signing Stockdale, he is 'pleased' with the Cameron Dawson that has returned to Wednesday after his loan spell.

Both goalkeepers present very different options too. Stockdale is 36-years-old and joins the Owls on the back of a campaign with Wycombe which saw him lead the side into the play-offs. He was their regular shot-stopper despite his age and showed no signs of slowing down either.

Dawson had a similarly successful campaign, as he played 45 league games for Exeter and helped them to finally seal an automatic promotion into League One. As ten years younger than his new teammate too, he presents an option with much more potential and ability to improve.

Moore then will have a big decision to make - and he said as much to the club's official website over who he will select when the new campaign begins in July.

The boss said: "Cameron Dawson has come back to us on the back of a 46-game loan that helped Exeter to promotion into our division.

"We have a different Cameron Dawson back and I’m really pleased with that. Both goalkeepers are in different places in their careers and both will be pushing each other every step of the way in terms of fighting for that number one spot. It will be a battle for the gloves, 100%."

The Verdict

Darren Moore is now blessed with options in goal going forward and that is not a bad thing to have as Sheffield Wednesday try to get out of League One.

The fact that both are completely different too is also a positive. If they want an experienced head that is probably more reliable, then they can turn to David Stockdale who only last season led a side into the top six. If they want to give a younger option a chance, then they now have the ability to do so with Dawson.

Dawson may have less experience in the Championship but his time spent in League Two suggests he can be a regular a division higher with Wednesday. Having helped lead Exeter to a promotion, it proves he has been one of the better goalkeepers in the fourth tier and when you look at the fact he conceded only 40, that backs it up even further.

Wednesday then will have to run the rule over both in pre-season and see who will get the nod when the whistle blows on the opening day of the season.
