Striker's that are not prolific in front of goal are sometimes unfashionable in the EFL, however there is a lot more to the role than finding the net.

One player who makes key contributions on a regular basis but does not carry an enormous goal threat is Callum Paterson.

The 27-year-old has been a reliable performer for Sheffield Wednesday in recent years and has stepped in admirably, with Lee Gregory and Michael Smith sidelined, for the Owls of late.

Darren Moore passed judgment on the Scotsman's recent performances and how crucial he can be for the team when he spoke to YorkshireLive.

He said: "I am really pleased with his unselfish work.

"When you see Callum doing that, you just want him to get a goal.

"All strikers and attacking players want goals to showcase their work.

"We do appreciate the work Callum did for us (against Charlton Athletic on Saturday).

"I thought Callum ran his heart out for the team in difficult conditions."

There is fierce competition for places at Wednesday this season, particularly at the top of the pitch, Paterson's versatility helps him in that regard.

However, since relegation to League One he has mainly been a fringe player, when the 27-year-old could be a more valued squad member at a whole host of Championship clubs.

The Verdict

Paterson is in the final year of his contract at Sheffield Wednesday this season and should Moore remain at the helm, it would be a surprise to see him stay on beyond that.

The signing of Michael Smith this summer, though supporters are yet to see the fruits of it, does suggest that Paterson's playing time will be further reduced and should attacking reinforcements be sourced in the remainder of this window and in January, an exit could be on the cards before the season is out.

You need the whole squad onside to achieve promotion and though Paterson is not first choice for the Owls, his appearances from the bench and in rotation will be crucial.
