Darren Moore reveals update over Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer plans

Sheffield Wednesday missed out on a promotion straight back to the Championship from League One this year – and with the boss eager to ensure they don’t miss out again next season, the manager has revealed to the club’s official YouTube channel that he is already getting to work on potential transfer dealings.

The Owls have been up and down over the course of the League One season but when it mattered, they soared towards the top end of the division and were able to seal a play-off spot and a potential tilt towards promotion.

They couldn’t seal an automatic spot but booked a place in the play-off semi-finals against Sunderland. However, the club were unable to see off the Black Cats and were duly dumped out of the competition and out of the running for a promotion.

Quiz: Which club did Sheffield Wednesday sign these 24 players from in the 2000s?

STEVE HARKESS

Darren Moore will not want to suffer a similar fate next season and will no doubt have plenty of names in mind that he wants to sign this summer. The club cannot afford to merely stand still and let others overtake them in the promotion battle and that will mean the manager seeking out plenty of transfer dealings and keeping the squad refreshed.

It seems as though he has already gotten to work in bringing players in and holding talks too, with Moore revealing to the club’s official YouTube channel that he has held ‘positive talks’ already and that the club will ‘try their best’ to land the right kind of player and bring them to Hillsborough.

Speaking about transfer dealings then, Moore said: “Yeah it’s underway [their transfer work] and it has to happen in the background.

“Obviously some of the small frustrations is that one or two are away on holiday, which you can understand. But some of the talks have been positive and as I said, the competition is fierce out there, it really is, the competition is fierce.

“The type and level of players that we are competing to try and get as well, they’re not short of offers from one or two others as well. We have to consistently try our very best, like we continue to do, and hopefully we can get the right players and the right blend into the club this season.”

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday don’t have a bad squad by any means and they haven’t got into the top six this season via a fluke – they sealed a play-off spot by playing well, having a good team and picking up the points that they needed.

However, with a few loan deals ending and some of the squad leaving at the end of their contracts, there is room in some areas of the squad for reinforcements and improvements and Darren Moore appears to have already gotten to work in ensuring his side is strong enough to go again next year. It’s good to get the work done early, as it allows the squad to settle better ahead of the next campaign.

If they can do their dealings early, it will allow them to have a better pre-season and be better equipped for when the next season inevitably rolls around. Right now, they appear to have plenty of deals in the offing, with the manager confirming that they have already held some talks.

No deals have been confirmed yet but it will be positive to hear that work is already being done. If they can do the right kind of transfer dealing too, then it could allow them to get a promotion in the next season.
