Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has confirmed that Barry Bannan picked up a knock in the win over MK Dons on Saturday, although he is confident the issue isn't serious.

The central midfielder has been a key figure for the Owls over the years and his big influence on the team remains. Therefore, it was a concern to see him go off in the second half of the win against MK Dons.

And, speaking to the Sheffield Star, Moore gave an update on his captain, as he revealed that a contact injury was the reason for his withdrawal.

"He did have a little knock on his knee. He turned out on the ball and was on the end of a crunching tackle. But I think he's OK. Don't forget it's early in the season. Players are still finding their match fitness and everything else.

"We took him off for the knock, we saw him struggling a bit."

Wednesday face Sunderland in the League Cup this week, whilst they're back in League One action when they face Charlton on Saturday.

The verdict

It's always a worry for the Owls when Bannan goes off as even though they have a good squad, he remains the talisman and is a standout player in the third tier.

So, this update is encouraging and the fact the Scotsman left the stadium walking freely offers more reason for optimism.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Bannan didn't feature against Sunderland in the cup but you would expect him to be back in the XI against the Addicks for what is another big game.
