Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has revealed that young striker Luke Cook is facing up to eight weeks out of action due to injury.

Cook only joined Wednesday last month, with the 19-year-old linking up with the Owls on a professional deal from the London-based Mass Elite Academy.

Having completed that move, the teenager then went on to make his senior debut for the club in their League Cup win over Sunderland.

However, the striker was then stretchered off during an Under 21s game against Burnley earlier this month, with an ankle injury that worryingly, needed to be assessed in hospital at the time.

Now though, it seems that injury is not as bad as first feared, even if it will keep him out of action for some time to come yet, judging by these latest comments from Moore.

Providing an update on Cook's fitness and recovery, the Wednesday boss told The Sheffield Star: “It’s weeks. We think he’s probably going to be six to eight weeks, but it isn’t as bad as we first feared.

"We thought it might be months and months, but we think think it’s now going to be more weeks than months. It’s an ankle injury, and we think it’s not going to be as long as what we first anticipated.”

The Verdict

You feel that there will be some mixed feelings on this for Cook and Wednesday.

On the one hand, there is likely to be a great deal of relief that this is not going to keep him out for as long as had seemed possible when he first suffered the injury.

However, eight weeks is still a long time to be out of action, especially when you are at the point in your career that Cook is, where momentum will be vital in continuing his development.

As a result, you imagine the teenager will be keen to get back out there as soon as possible, especially given the potential to push for a place in the first-team that he has already shown.
