Darren Moore makes Sheffield Wednesday transfer claim ahead of upcoming window

Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has admitted that the club will be looking to sign players this summer who will help with the balance of the team and will be able to provide a cutting edge in League One.

The Owls were unable to secure an immediate return to the Championship last season as they suffered a narrow defeat to Sunderland in the semi-finals of the play-offs.

Moore has already opted to make some alterations to his squad as Chey Dunkley, Sam Hutchinson and Saido Berahino are all set to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of June.

The Owls are also set to be without Harlee Dean, Lewis Gibson, Tyreece John-Jules, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Jordan Storey and Olamide Shodipo next season as these players have all now returned to their parent-clubs following their loan spells at Hillsborough.

With the transfer window set to open on June 10th, Moore will be keen to assemble a squad which is capable of challenging for automatic promotion.

Making reference to plans for this window, the Owls boss has revealed the criteria in terms of what he wants a player to bring to the club.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Moore said: “The planning is the exciting bit!

“We’ll look at the fixtures when they come out and when the players come back the competition starts.

“They all want to play and I wouldn’t have it any other way, that’s how it should be.

“We look forward to it but there’s a lot of work before we even get to that point, in terms of getting the right blend and right type of players to move us forward, to give us more cutting edge and balance throughout the team.”

The Verdict

Wednesday know that in order to emerge as contenders for promotion next season, they cannot afford to make any mistakes when it comes to their recruitment.

Whereas Moore’s decision to sign the likes of George Byers and Lee Gregory last summer turned out to be somewhat of a masterstroke, John-Jules, Shodipo and Kamberi all failed to make a lasting impact at Hillsborough.

It could be argued that Wednesday ought to be focusing on making moves for players this summer who have a track-record of achieving success in the third-tier.

If they are able to draft in some classy operators, there is every chance that the Owls will make a positive start to the season as they are already able to call upon the services of individuals who excelled at this level in the previous term.
