Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has reiterated that he believes goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell is the best keeper in League One this season following his display at Portsmouth.

The Owls traveled to Fratton Park on Tuesday night aiming to continue their unbeaten run in League One and they were indebted to Peacock-Farrell for helping them frustrate their hosts and grind out a good point on their travels.

Peacock-Farrell has made some high-profile errors for the Owls this season during his loan spell from Burnley, but he has equally caught the eye at times with some excellent saves from both open play and penalties for both Sheffield Wednesday and Northern Ireland.

Against Portsmouth, Peacock-Farrell managed to deliver arguably his best performance for the Owls so far with him managing to pull off three vital saves from inside his penalty area. While he was able to command his penalty area really well to relieve pressure on Sheffield Wednesday’s makeshift back three especially after they had gone down to ten men.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live after the Owls’ goalless draw at Portsmouth, Moore insisted that the Owls are grateful to Peacock-Farrell for helping them pick up an important point. While he also outlined he firmly still believes that he is the best goalkeeper in League One.

He said: “Some of the saves weren't easy but they were made to look routine. His positional sense was so good.

“At the end when they were putting the ball in the box, he had to really stretch for them to relieve the pressure. I thought his game management was excellent at the end. He had to be big.

“Teams put a lot of balls into the box in this league but I thought he was excellent. He had to perform and he did tonight and we are really grateful for him.

“Credit to him and we move on to Crewe on Saturday and hopefully we will get one or two players back.

“I said at the start of the season when he came to the club that he is the best goalkeeper in the league.

“The clean sheet will have done him a world of good. He has performed heroics tonight and he showed why he is at the level and standard that he is.”

The verdict

Moore has been very supportive of Peacock-Farrell this season and he has backed him all the way even at times when he has made mistakes that have cost precious points for the Owls. He was rewarded for that faith on Tuesday with the Northern Ireland international showing just how good he can be and when he plays like that Sheffield Wednesday are a tough nut to crack.

Peacock-Farrell should be amongst the best keepers in League One though really considering his international and Premier League experience. He is the sort of keeper that needs to be playing regularly at a high level during this loan spell if he is to have any chance of going back to Burnley and competing for a place in their side next term.

At the moment, there are not many keepers in the third tier that could deliver the sort of performance that he produced against Portsmouth. However, it is all about consistency for him and he needs to find that type of form more often if he is to play regularly at a higher level as he aims to do.
