Darren Moore makes admission over Sheffield Wednesday man’s future

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has told The Star that Massimo Luongo’s future with the club is very much up in the air at present.

The Australian international is due to see his current contract expire at Hillsborough come the end of the season, which means that there is a very strong chance that he could move on if fresh terms aren’t agreed in a not too distant future.

Luongo has been viewed as something of a key player since his arrival from Queens Park Rangers back in 2019 but has seen his time with the Owls plagued by various injury troubles in addition to being part of the side that was relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last season.

Speaking about the midfielder’s future recently, Moore was unable to offer any assurances over whether the player would stay with the club in the long term or not:

“Mass just wants to get back to playing football to a level and playing his consistent best. We know the qualities that Mass has. We just want him to do it over a consistent part of it and then we can all have a look.”

Quiz: Have each of these 25 ex-Sheffield Wednesday players ever played in the Premier League?

Has Des Walker played in the Premier League?

Luongo has now returned from a three game suspension and will now be looking to help his side get back in and amongst the race for promotion in League One.

He has so far made 10 appearances across all competitions this season.

The Verdict

The benefits of holding onto a player that has the leadership qualities and abilities of Luongo is there for all to see and now the Owls will be aiming to tie him to a new deal.

Ultimately it will come down to the player’s own desire to stay put as he is now at an age where he may only have one or two high profile moves left in him before he hangs up his boots.

He may feel that he is good enough to play at a much higher level than the third tier, so will no doubt consider his options this summer.

If Wednesday miss out on promotion, they may as well wave goodbye to keeping the midfielder.
