West Bromwich Albion’s Darren Moore has played down Bakary Sako’s previous links with Wolverhampton Wanderers, after the Baggies swooped to secure the service of the free agent earlier today.

An announcement came from Albion early this afternoon, with Sako signing a short-term contract at the Hawthorns after impressing whilst on trial with Moore’s side.

The 30-year-old becomes the latest player to have played for both West Brom and Wolves, with Sako featuring for Albion’s fierce rivals between 2012 and 2015.

During that three-year spell in Old Gold, Sako scored 38 goals in 124 appearances across all competitions, with the bulk of those coming in League One and the Championship.

With the obvious concern amongst West Brom’s supporters about Sako’s connections with Wolves, Moore has issued a message to the Express & Star: “He's one of us now. He was over the road in his previous career but now he's here with us. He's got the blue and white stripes on.

"It's not just Bakary who has played for both clubs, others have too. I see no problem. I want everybody to let him feel settled and at home.

"One thing I will say to the supporters, is he's been an absolute credit, even when he was on trial. He's worked hard, we've seen some flair in training, but his commitment has been second to none.

"He's really submerged himself in the club and the squad from day one.”

Sako is eligible to feature tomorrow evening when West Brom take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, but Moore has remained coy on whether that means he will play, particularly with West Brom in great form.

Albion moved to the top of the Championship table at the weekend following their 3-2 victory over Preston North End.

The Verdict

There’s no love lost between West Brom and Wolves, with the latter’s supporters sure to be gutted about Sako agreeing a deal at the Hawthorns.

For West Brom’s supporters, they need to forget Sako’s past and focus on what he can bring to the table.

At his very best, Sako will be amongst the Championship’s best wingers and he could help Albion back to the Premier League.
