Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has admitted that while the club's recent underwhelming attacking performances have been a concern, he has been pleased with their defensive displays.

The Owls have only scored two goals in their last three league games and were unable to make a breakthrough in last weekend's clash with Derby County.

This particular fixture ended in a stalemate as the Owls claimed their 11th clean-sheet of the season at this level.

Wednesday are currently unable to call upon the services of Lee Gregory and Josh Windass due to their respective injury issues.

In the absence of these two players, the Owls turned to Michael Smith and Alex Mighten for inspiration at Pride Park on Saturday.

Mallik Wilks and Callum Paterson meanwhile were introduced as substitutes in this particular fixture.

Wednesday will be looking to get back to winning ways in League One this weekend when they head to St James Park to face Exeter City.

Ahead of this upcoming clash, Moore has offered an honest assessment on the club's recent displays.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post about the attacking side of Wednesday's game, Moore said: "It is a concern.

"But out of the two, if there's one that I wanted right it is the off the ball (defensive) stuff.

"If you get that right, you can always win a game.

"We just need to find that special ingredient with the ball.

"I said to the boys that they have an efficiency at the moment that is incredible but you need to bottle and keep.

"It's the work off the ball and a real doggedness and determination in the team.

"We are hard to beat and I don't want to relinquish that.

"With the in-possession stuff, we will get better at that.

"But we have to keep the stuff we are doing off the ball."

The Verdict

When you consider that Wednesday have an abundance of attacking players at their disposal, it wouldn't be at all surprising if they begin to find the back of the net on a regular basis in League One again.

By maintaining their consistency over the course of the coming months, the Owls will boost their chances of securing a top-two finish.

Set to take on Exeter this weekend, Wednesday will need the likes of Smith, Wilks and Mighten to step up to the mark in this particular fixture.

Given that Michael Ihiekwe will miss this clash due to injury, Mark McGuinness, Liam Palmer and Reece James are likely to be tasked with providing defensive cover for goalkeeper David Stockdale.
