Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore has insisted that the Owls are going to investigate the reasons behind their recurring injury situation following their 3-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night.

Moore’s side went into their FA Cup first round replay with Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night aiming to take revenge on the League One automatic promotion chasers after they inflicted a 3-0 defeat on them earlier in the campaign. While they were also aiming to extend their ten-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

However, struggling with a host of injury issues, the Owls found it difficult to compete against Plymouth away from home once again and they ended up on the end of another 3-0 defeat against Ryan Lowe’s side.

It was the sort of performance that showed the gap that there is between the two squads in terms of confidence and quality at the moment.

Those injury issues were added to yet further by the news of Marvin Johnson’s injury setback after he missed out on the Owls’s squad for their trip to Plymouth. While Dennis Adeniran was also forced off the field in the first half through injury as well.

That means that Sheffield Wednesday are very stretched at the moment in terms of the number of players that they available in the defensive area in particular.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live following the defeat at Plymouth on Tuesday, Moore insisted that the Owls are now going to be looking into the reasons behind why they are suffering with so many muscle injury issues at the moment.

He said: “We will look at it because there have been a lot of soft tissue injuries. We will have to have a look at the squad and the injuries.

"We have lost two more players to soft tissue injuries in the last four days so we will have to have a look at it. We will be looking into it.”

The verdict

It is clear that the Owls do need to look into the reason behind their current lengthy list of injury issues and they need to do all that they can to address that and make sure that changes when those players return to action.

There will be some doubt from him over the level of trust he can replace in certain members of his squad after their performance when given a chance to impress against Plymouth. Not many of the players selected to feature on the night can come away from the game with any real credit and confidence to take into the coming weeks.

It was a sobering evening for the Owls and one that they need to show a swift response to because otherwise they risk falling into a poor run of form that might leave them too much to do in League One during the second half of the campaign.

You do have to feel for Moore in the sense that he is having to compensate for a lot of injuries to his most important players at the moment, as he says any side would struggle with the volume of absentees that Sheffield Wednesday have right now. However, they should have a large enough squad to cope far better than they did against Plymouth and it was a concerning display and result.
