Sheffield Wednesday suffered a defeat last night in the EFL Trophy against Burton Albion as the Brewers won 3-2, with Michael Smith and Josh Windass missing the game thanks to minor knocks.

The EFL Trophy may well be a bit of an afterthought for Wednesday this year, though they have it in them to win it, as they'll be looking to win promotion from the third tier back into the Sky Bet Championship.

They sit fourth in the table having made a solid start and face Wycombe Wanderers this weekend as league action continues, with Moore giving an update on the aforementioned duo.

As quoted by Yorkshire Live, he was asked last night why both Smith and Windass missed out and he he revealed that they were carrying small knocks, though both should be fit for the game with the Chairboys this weekend:

"Both of them had little knocks and we didn't take the risk with them. We expect them both to be fine for the weekend.

"I didn't want to take a risk with them. If they had been fine, they definitely would have been involved tonight."

The Verdict

Things could have been a lot worse for the Owls if these two had more serious injuries to worry about.

Ultimately it made sense to give them the night off against Burton to make sure, as much as possible, that they are ready for an important game this weekend.

Both have had their injury issues during their time at the club, and keeping them fit is going to be integral to the success they hope to have as a team this season.
