Former England striker Darren Bent has heaped praise on Leeds United midfielder Tyler Roberts after his impressive performance against QPR yesterday.

Leeds proved too much for the R's at Elland Road, dominating the game and finishing as comfortable 2-0 winners.

The visitors have conceded the second-most goals in the Championship this season and are amongst the highest scorers, so it always seemed likely to be an open game in West Yorkshire.

Roberts, making his first start of the season, took full advantage of that and opened the scoring for Marcelo Bielsa's side just before half time.

Jack Harrison laid the ball off to the Welshman at the top of the box and the 20-year-old tucked the ball into the bottom corner with a really smart finish.

Roberts nearly added a second after the break, bringing down Kalvin Phillip's lofted pass beautifully but lifting his strike over the bar.

The 20-year-old has drawn some well-deserved praise for his display as, speaking to Football Insider, Bent revealed he was a big fan.

He said: "Yeah, I rate him really highly, to be fair he has done well.

“He played really really well, he did get a goal and what I really like about Leeds, they have someone who can step in whenever they have injuries or anything like that.

“Bielsa just manages to make it work like it’s nothing and he has to take a lot of the credit as he just sees things in people.

“Roberts played really really well.”

Leeds are currently second in the Championship and welcome Blackburn Rovers to Elland Road next Saturday.

The Verdict

Bent has a lot of Premier League experience, so his praise should be encouraging for Leeds fans.

Roberts put in a hugely impressive display against QPR on Saturday and looked as if he could be set to play a key role for Bielsa's side this season.

Prior to the game, the Whites were the lowest scorers in the top six and had found the net just five times in their last seven games but it appears that the creative spark the attacking midfielder is able to provide could play a big part in solving that issue.

The 20-year-old started in a free role behind Patrick Bamford on Saturday and caused issues for the QPR defenders all day.
