West Bromwich Albion defender Darnell Furlong is looking forward to playing alongside his former Queens Park Rangers teammate Matt Phillips at his new club.
The right-back played behind Phillips at QPR and made his professional debut alongside him for the Hoops in the Premier League in 2014/15.
The defender admitted that he is looking forward to playing alongside him again for West Brom this season and is hoping to form a good partnership with the winger.
“He’s a really nice guy. He’s made me feel welcome. It’s nice to be back playing with a familiar face,” said Furlong, as quoted by the Express & Star.
“We’ll try and make it a good partnership. Matty’s an incredible player with what he can do, not only in the Championship but in the Premier League. I’m delighted to be working with him again.”
Even though the two are close friends from their time together at QPR, Furlong admitted that he did not tell Phillips that he was moving to the Hawthorns.
“No I was told to keep it under wraps, I didn’t want to ruin anything or upset anyone so I kept it quite quiet. But it was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to have a conversation with him once it was all done,” he revealed.
Phillips was a key player for West Brom last season, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 33 appearances in all competitions, as the Baggies just missed out on promotion from the Championship.
The winger joined West Brom from QPR in 2016 and has one year remaining on his contract at the Hawthorns, although the club are expecting him to stay for another season.
This is a good sign for West Brom fans. Furlong is a talented footballer and he’s been an important player for QPR over the past few seasons.
He could turn out to be an key player for West Brom this season and I think he should be able to form a good partnership with Phillips down the right.
It can’t always be easy for a player moving to a new club, so I’m sure Furlong will appreciate having a familiar face around in Phillips, as he settles in to life at the Hawthorns.
The two seem to have a close friendship off the pitch and West Brom fans will be hoping that they can bring the best out of each other on the field for the Baggies next season.
