Bolton Wanderers attacker Dapo Afolayan has said there is no better feeling in football than scoring a late winner after he struck a last gasp goal versus Fleetwood Town yesterday afternoon.

The home side, Fleetwood, took a 16th minute lead in the match, with Carlos Mendes Gomes' goal looking like it might seal them all three points until relatively late on.

However, Bolton had other ideas, finding an equaliser in the 85th minute via Conor Bradley before Afolayan took all three points with his 95th minute goal.

“There’s no better feeling in football than that – especially in front of the away fans,” Afolayan told Bolton Wanderers club media after the match.

“Celebrating with our fans like that was special. It was so good to get that release and that emotion we showed at the end.

“When the ball came across from Josh [Sheehan] I just needed to concentrate and put it in the bottom corner and I was already off. The shirt was coming off and everything!

“It was remarkably special. We said that afterwards – that’s the whole group. That’s no individual player, that’s everyone on the pitch who played."

Following the victory, Bolton sit 5th in the League One standings.

Wanderers are level on points with Peterborough United in fourth, with a game in hand over them.

The Verdict

The elation of striking a late winner must be unreal.

From a fans perspective, celebrating them are some of the best moments you have in football so you can understand what Afolayan is getting at here.

With the goal, Afolayan did no harm staking his claim for a more regular starting spot in the Bolton line up.

Although whether it has any effect on that remains to be seen.

As for Bolton, they are well in the mix for the play-offs this season.
