Top scorer Dapo Afolayan has been a standout performer for Bolton, having scored 12 goals along the way. He was also awarded the club’s Player of the Year award.
His strong season meant the player did attract interest from teams such as Fulham and Cardiff City but Bolton are not keen to sell.
This is a decision that Afolayan is happy with himself as he sees his side going for promotion next season, as he told The Bolton News: “I said in one of my first interviews at Bolton that absolutely everything is here.
“It’s just about getting things together on the pitch, working together, and I think we’re starting to do that.
“Promotion is exactly what our aim is. I don’t think there is anything wrong with saying that.
“I think that any club in this league should be targeting promotion – it’s what you have to do.
“We want to be playing in the Championship and the Premier League and especially for me as a player that is what I look up to and what I want to do with this club.”
Quiz: Which club did Bolton Wanderers sign these 24 players from in the 2000s?
Bolton finished the season in good form but looking at their results, it was the games against the other big teams that let them down this year. They are ready to work on that, according to the striker, who said: “Everyone at the club knows what the target is, there’s a lot of pressure on it but it’s up to us. We have to stand up to that pressure.
“We have to go away, work on our game and everyone come back better. We’ve had a good look at the league this season so it’s down to us to come next season.
“It is up to us to step up to that level. It is a challenge that I relish and I don’t shy away from a challenge, so we’ll have a good go again next season.”
Bolton fans will no doubt be relieved to hear that Afolayan is looking ahead to next season as a Bolton player, given he has made such an impact in the side this season.
Ian Evatt’s side came close to the play-offs this season but it proved to be just a step too far for them. However, it also served as a good marker to show the club where they are and help them think about how they further progress.
Evatt has already made his first signing of the summer recruiting Jack Iredale from Cambridge United, so it shows his intentions for next year and the fact he is well prepared.
Now, they will be looking ahead to next season and working hard to get promoted.
