Former England international, Danny Murphy, has stated that Sheffield Wednesday's appointment of Garry Monk is very 'sensible' for both the manager and the club.

Monk was appointed as Wednesday manager on Friday after Lee Bullen had stepped in as caretaker manager for the start of the new campaign.

Bullen stepped into the role because former boss Steve Bruce resigned in order to go to Newcastle United having spent just six months in charge.

Ex Liverpool midfielder, Murphy, is a fan of Monk and thinks it'll end up being a good appointment for all parties involved.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy said: "He’s not going into a club that’s desperately struggling. They’ve got a decent squad.

"I like him. I’ve met him a few times. I like the way his teams play. I thought he was unlucky originally when he got into management that Swansea got rid of him in his first bad spell really. I think that had Swansea kept him at that point, they might not have ended up in the predicament they did.

"I thought the Birmingham situation he dealt with brilliantly, with all the problems – the points deduction and stuff like that. He maintained his dignity. They still played good football. Even at Leeds he did alright, to be fair.

"I don’t think there are many guys who have got as much experience in the Championship that they could have given the job to. I think it’s a really sensible appointment. I think it suits both. And the fans will enjoy watching them play."

The Verdict

Murphy is right in most of what he has said about the situation. It is a good appointment and he's never actually done that bad at any of the clubs that he's been at.

One thing that he's got going for him is the fact that he's not taking over a depleted squad or one without any confidence. He's got a team ready and raring to go, and I'm sure he will have already looked at how the Owls have played in the opening six fixtures of the season.

It's a big first game as he goes up against a Huddersfield team that will also be buoyed by the announcement of a new manager, Danny Cowley. Three points would be the perfect start for both.
