Danny Mills has urged Leeds United to agree a new contract with manager Marcelo Bielsa to ensure he remains at the Yorkshire club moving forward.

The Argentine coach took charge at Elland Road ahead of the 2018/19 campaign and has had the Whites competing at the very top of the Championship throughout his tenure.

Leeds finished third last term and are top of the table as things stand – seven points clear of the play-off places with nine games remaining.

The EFL season has been suspended for more than two months, meaning the Whites' promotion push has been put on hold.

According to The Athletic's Phil Hay, "all bets are off" regarding Bielsa's future should the Elland Road outfit fail to secure promotion this term.

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills has addressed the situation concerning the 64-year-old coach and urged Leeds to secure his future with the club.

He said: "Promotion is the key. That is absolutely vital.

“I have seen rumours that there are other clubs sniffing around him already and looking to tempt him away.

“Nobody is surprised by that given what he has done and the reputation he had before that was exceptional.

“It is really important for Leeds to get in there, get him tied down, and get that sorted.

“It would at least give the club some sort of stability going forward for next season.

“But Bielsa can change his mind very quickly and that is the only downside.”

It has been reported that Fiorentina and Hellas Verona are both interested in Bielsa and could make a move for him should the opportunity arise this summer.

The Verdict

Mills' stance will likely be echoed by the majority of Leeds fans, who will surely be desperate to ensure the Argentine stays at the club.

Bielsa has done a fantastic job at Elland Road so far and has become something of a cult hero for many supporters of the Yorkshire club.

Losing him in the summer would be a massive blow, particularly if it is paired with missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

That said, Bielsa is an interesting character and it may not be as easy as just handing him an improved deal.
