Danny Mills has revealed that he expected more from Helder Costa this season but believes that he could actually improve in the Premier League.

The winger joined on an initial loan deal from Wolves last summer, with the Whites having an obligation to sign the Portuguese international for £15m at the end of this season.

Given the fee, there was a lot of expectancy on Costa and a return of three goals and three assists in 37 league games is not particularly impressive, although it should be said that he has been a regular for the team that currently top the table.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds full-back Mills said the wide man had underperformed but suggested he could be someone who excels in the top-flight.

"It is tricky. A little bit too expensive but I am not sure who you can get in better. The Premier League is different to the Championship and some players’ styles are more suited. You get a little bit more time on the ball in the Premier League sometimes. It is not as physical or robust.

"Some players are better in the Premier League than they are in the Championship."

Marcelo Bielsa's side are seven points clear of third place in the race for automatic promotion.

The verdict

You can understand where Mills is coming from but the reality is that it's rare for players to find playing at a higher level easier.

Plus, Costa left Wolves because he didn't make the impact they expected in the Premier League, so it's not like he is someone who is untested and hasn't been given a chance in the top-flight.

Ultimately though, it will be down to the wide man to make the step up if Leeds are promoted because Bielsa will be ruthless and look elsewhere if he needs to.
