Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has tipped two of the club's current squad - midfielder Kalvin Phillips and defender Ben White - to be named in England's squad for the European Championships in the summer of 2021.

The pair have both emerged as key figures for Leeds in their push for promotion to the Premier League this season, helping Marcelo Bielsa's side to top spot in the Championship table, seven points clear of the play-off places with nine games of the season still to be played.

Indeed, Mills is convinced that the duo will be playing in the Premier League next season regardless of whether or not Leeds can see that push for promotion through, something he believes will be enough to secure both players a place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the delayed continental championship.

Speaking about Phillips' hopes of a call-up, Mills was quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post as telling Sky Sports News: "I think everybody appreciates that Kalvin Phillips is not a million miles away and he might have been getting a call-up.

"There isn't a great deal of English holding midfield players at the moment in good form. Kalvin will be playing Premier League football next season, he has been the best player in the Championship by far so after a season in the Premier League I think he will be in the England squad.

"He might have even been in it this season with the way things are going. I think the Euros were possibly a little bit too early for him but after another season I cannot see him not being in the squad in 2021."

On White, who has been an ever-present in the league for Leeds since his season-long loan move from Brighton back in the summer transfer window, Mills added: "Ben White has been the best defender in the Championship this season.

"If his agent wants to get in touch with me and thank me that's fine but I have got him in the Euros next season. He has been superb, he is good on the ball, he's a good defender.

"We are going to assume that Leeds get promoted and whether he stays at Leeds or he goes to another Premier League side, he will be playing in the Premier League next season no matter what and he is a fantastic player. He has a great chance with a full season."

The Verdict

I do think Mills has a point here.

Both Phillips and White have been absolutely outstanding this year, and it would feel like a deserved recognition of their achievements if they were to be handed a place in the England squad for next years Euros.

Indeed, when you look at the number of top-level Premier League sides both players have been linked with this season, it does seem inevitable that the duo will be playing top-flight football next season, regardless of whether or not Leeds themselves are.

As a result, it will be even harder for Southgate to ignore their performances when it comes to naming his squad for that tournament, meaning both will surely be in a strong position for a call-up by then if not before.
