Danny Mills says that Leeds United attacker Helder Costa must do more for his side as they battle for promotion to the Premier League over the next few months.

Costa made the move to Elland Road from Wolves on a loan-to-buy deal back in the summer transfer window, but has yet to really make an impact for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

The Portuguese winger has made 35 appearances in all competitions for Leeds this season, scoring four goals and providing three assists in that time.

Costa previously demonstrated his ability at this level during Wolves' Championship title-winning campaign in 2017/18, and the Mills appears to feel the 26-year-old has yet to really reproduce those performances since making the switch to Elland Road.

Speaking to Football Insider about Costa, the former Leeds defender said: "All players with great ability, it’s not an issue but you’re always like: ‘Come on, give us a bit more, give us a bit more consistency, add a little bit more to that'.

“That’s what it’s all about, that’s what it comes down to. Players like that frustrate you more than anything else. That’s the best way you can look at it.

“You know they have all the potential, know the ability that they have in there, sometimes they just don’t perform as you’d expect.”

It was reported in the summer that Leeds will pay £15million for Costa when his loan deal becomes permanent at the end of the season.

Leeds are still second in the Championship standings following their 1-1 draw with Brentford on Tuesday afternoon, putting them ahead of third-placed Fulham on goal difference.

The Verdict

I can certainly understand Mills' point here.

When you look at the impact Costa had for Wolves when they stormed to the Championship title in 2017/18, it is hard not to feel as though the winger has underperformed this year by comparison.

As a result, with Leeds somewhat stumbling towards promotion at the minute, it certainly feels as though they could benefit with Costa rediscovering some of that past form sooner rather than later in order to give them a much-needed lift, particularly with the lack of January signings leaving them with little fresh options to turn to.

Indeed, given the amount Leeds are set to pay for him in the summer, it could certainly be costly for them if Costa fails to start making an impact over the next few months, in more ways than one.
