Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has urged the club to sell winger Jack Clarke this summer and use the money to strengthen the squad in other areas.

The 18-year-old established himself as one of the key players for Leeds in the Championship last season, in his breakthrough season for the first-team.

Clarke scored two goals and provided two assists in 22 Championship appearances for the Whites last season and his impressive performances seem to have attracted the interest of Tottenham Hotspur, who are reportedly considering offering Leeds around £10million for the player.

Marcelo Bielsa will be looking to strengthen his squad and build a team capable of winning automatic promotion next season, but Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani admitted last week that the club will face a difficult summer in the transfer market.

Mills believes that Leeds' best chance of improving their squad is to sell one of their key players and believes Clarke is the obvious choice.

“For Leeds to get back in the Premier League, the one to let go is Clarke," Mills told Football Insider.

"I’d sell Jack Clarke for £12million and bring in three quality signings, whether permanent or a top loan signing requiring a big fee.

“His potential could be outstanding, but you look at the other main assets – Phillips, Jansson and Roofe – they have played an awful lot and Clarke has been in and out. He is the expendable one.

“Leeds aren’t going to get promoted by selling all their best players, but letting one go can help them build a better team to get them over the line.”

The Verdict

I'm not sure I agree with Mills here.

Clarke is regarded as one of the brightest young talents at Leeds and could have an important role to play in helping the team win promotion next season.

I think selling Clarke could be a big mistake and Bielsa will still be able to use the loan market to strengthen his squad in the summer.
