Having signed on loan at Huddersfield Town this month, Andy King is already impressing manager Danny Cowley and is pushing for his first league start.

Having been appointed back in September, Danny Cowley has only just had the chance to strengthen his squad to push towards safety in the Championship and has done so very well in recent weeks.

The Terriers have made four first-team signings in the shape of Emile Smith-Rowe, Richard Stearman, Harry Toffolo and Andy King. All of these made their debut when Huddersfield hosted Brentford last weekend and drew 0-0.

King started the game on the bench for Cowley’s side but came on in the second half to help the Terriers towards a much-needed point against the Bees.

King signed for the Terriers to help add some vital experience to their young midfield, with Juninho Bacuna, Lewis O’Brien and Trevoh Chalobah currently featuring regularly. The Welsh international has made nearly 400 appearances for the Foxes and was a part of the side that won the Premier League title in 2016.

However, he now faces a contrasting task to help maintain the Terriers’ Championship status this season as their current situation becomes more precarious.

Danny Cowley’s side face Hull City tonight at the KCOM Stadium knowing that a win could put daylight between them and the bottom three. Speaking to the Examiner, Cowley has been reflecting on King’s start at the John Smith’s Stadium and what he expects him to bring in the coming weeks and months, suggesting a first league start could be on the cards for this evening: "He came on at the back end of the game against Brentford, which was good and I thought he gave us a real calming influence.

"Tactically he is really bright, a good decision-maker. Technically he is excellent, he has that ability to arrive and make the box and he's a clean finisher.

"So he definitely adds to the young players we have in Lewis O'Brien, Trevoh Chalobah and Juninho Bacuna in that area.

"He has trained well all week despite not having the game time he would have liked leading up to this loan move.

"But he is fully focused, wants to play and, by the way he is training, he is definitely putting his hand up (to play)."

Can you name where these former Huddersfield players are now?

The verdict

King’s presence in Huddersfield’s midfield will be very important as they push for safety this season, given how youthful their midfield was before.

The Terriers have been very shrewd in this transfer window to add key players to areas that they have been lacking in recent months, and King is a prime example of that.

Huddersfield’s draw with Brentford was a great marker for how they have recruited well this month, with a strong defensive performance against one of the league’s most potent attacks.

Tonight’s trip to Hull City will be another tough game but they can surely count on the ‘calming influence’ of King to help gain more control of games against sides further up the table.
