Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley has revealed that the current suspension of football has allowed the club to increase their scouting of foreign countries in search of potential transfer targets.

With the resumption of the season still seemingly some time away and players training at home in the meantime, it seems Cowley has taken the opportunity available to him to expand his pool of options when it comes to adding to his squad when the transfer window reopens, as well as assess the season so far.

Providing an update on what he himself is doing during the ongoing lockdown, Cowley told Huddersfield's official website: "It’s given us a chance to reflect. Football management and the football industry is 100 miles per hour, even between seasons you don’t get the time to reflect.

"It’s been a good opportunity to do that, especially coming into the Club mid-season it has been a whirlwind. It’s given us a really good opportunity to reflect, look at areas we’ve done well, look at areas we could improve on.

"It’s certainly given us time to upskill. We’re working hard in terms of recruitment trying to look at some foreign leagues and watch football in different countries.

"We feel like we know the lower divisions in this country really well having come through them, so we’ve done some recruitment work in some different countries as well as our own."

Discussing how he and his backroom team have also been preparing for the present season to get back underway, Cowley added: “We’ve done some work around our coaching library to put all our drills together, so we can use that with the Academy, so there are smooth transitions for when the Academy players train with us.

“We’ve been trying to connect the drills to our philosophy, the way we want to play and trying to produce a coaching curriculum to Huddersfield Town, which will help our planning.

"We’ve been trying to find different ways on and off the grass to help coach and educate the players. We’re developing those provisions, which will in terms help the environment and players when we are back playing."

When the season does eventually begin again, Huddersfield will once again find themselves in a battle against a second straight relegation, with the Terriers currently 18th in the Championship table, three points clear of the relegation zone with nine games of the season still to be played at some point.

The Verdict

I think Cowley deserves some credit here.

With what he has said, it looks as though he and his team are trying to make the best of a bad situation, by preparing both to strengthen their side in the short term and the long term ahead of football's return, with training preparation and transfer targets.

That is something that ought to serve Huddersfield well going forward, and further highlights the shrewd appointment they made by bringing Cowley to the club back in September.
