Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley has revealed the club's January recruitment plans, indicating he is open-minded about the players that may be brought in but they must be "the right people".

The Terriers were beaten 2-0 by Yorkshire rivals Leeds United on Saturday, meaning they've now gone five games without a win and are just two points above the relegation zone.

Huddersfield saw their fortunes turn around following the arrival of Cowley in September but have struggled in recent weeks and still have a lot of work to do if they're to ensure survival.

The January transfer window and the Terriers' recruitment is likely to play a big role in their push to stay up and speaking to Examiner Live ahead of the clash with Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, the Huddersfield boss revealed his stance on the topic.

He said: "We are open-minded in terms of the players we bring in.

"They have to be the right people–that is first and foremost.

"As to what levels they have come from, we are certainly open-minded.

"Above all they have to love football, they have got to want to play for Huddersfield Town and they have to come with a determination and a resilience–ready to fight and add to this team and the journey we are on.

"You look at players from lower levels and they do come with a huge ambition and desire.

"They come to a wonderful training ground like ours, play in front of 20,000-plus supporters who are right behind them and, naturally, that brings out the best in them.

"I like the humility of players who have been at the bottom and worked their way up but, also, there are some really good young players at Premier League clubs who have some of those qualities themselves but have just developed in a different way, with a high level of technical quality.

"For us, it is always about the balance, it's not always about having the best players.

"What it's about is getting the right complement of players and if you get the best complement, and they all bring the best out of each other, in a style and way of playing, it can be very effective."

It's not just new signings that Huddersfield need to be considering, they may face a struggle to ensure they don't see some key players leave–particularly Karlan Grant who has been linked with a Premier League move.

A win against Charlton, who have themselves lost six of their last eight, could see the Terriers move five points clear of the drop zone.

The Verdict

January looks as though it could be a key month for Huddersfield and their chances of survival.

They have been a better side since Cowley's arrival but he needs a chance to shape his squad and you'd hope the board will look to back him at the turn of the year.

It's hardly a surprise that for the Terriers boss so much of the decision over a move is about character–you feel he will want to be very involved with who comes and goes.
