Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has revealed that the club are not looking into the possibility of signing Stuart Findlay from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

A report from Football Insider yesterday suggested that Pompey were one of a host of clubs who were keeping tabs on Findlay ahead of a potential swoop this month.

Blackpool, Preston North End, Plymouth Argyle, Barnsley, Hibernian, Sheffield Wednesday and Hearts were also touted with a move for the Scotland international.

Although the Union are keen to keep Findlay at the club, it is understood that they won't stand in his way if a suitable offer is submitted in January.

During the previous MLS campaign, the defender failed to establish himself as a key player for Philadelphia as he only made seven appearances for the club in this particular division.

Whilst a return to the United Kingdom could be on the cards for Findlay, Cowley has confirmed that the defender will not be making a move to Fratton Park.

Speaking to Hampshire Live following his side's 0-0 draw with Cambridge United yesterday about whether the club are interested in signing Findlay, Cowley said: "No, nothing.

"I think he's on good money, went to America for a pay day."

The Verdict

It could be argued that Pompey may have potentially dodged a bullet as Findlay may have struggled to adapt to life in the third-tier due to the fact that he has never played at this level before during his career.

With a plethora of clubs seemingly in contention for the defender's signature, Portsmouth would have had to submit a significant bid to secure his services.

If Cowley is looking into the possibility of strengthening his options in the heart of defence, he could benefit from sealing a move for a player who knows exactly what it takes to compete in League One.

Providing that Portsmouth are able to bring in some quality additions between now and the end of January, they could go on to secure a top-six finish in the third-tier under the guidance of Cowley as they are currently only six points adrift of the play-offs places.
