Huddersfield Town manager Danny Cowley has suggested that the Terriers would be wanting to offer Danny Simpson a new deal to keep him at the club next season, but that would be dependent on which division they are in.

Simpson has been an important addition for the Terriers, since he was brought in a free transfer earlier in the campaign, with the experienced defender having made 21 Championship appearances so far and helped to add some extra defensive solidity down their right-hand side.

The 33-year-old has demonstrated that he still has a lot to offer, and his experience has been vital to helping the Terriers recover from a poor start to the season and start to pick up points and adjust to life back in the Championship, and he has been a key figure at right-back under Cowley.

Can you name the entire Huddersfield Town XI from their Play-Off final win in 2017 ?

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post ahead of Huddersfield’s clash with Charlton Athletic, Cowley revealed that the Terriers are interested in offering Simpson a new deal depending on whether they manage to survive in the Championship this term.

He said: "We like having him around. He has helped us change the team and the changing room around.

"He is a really good bloke, an excellent one-v-one defender.
"Without doubt we would like to be able to keep him beyond this year, but we need to know which division we will be in. Once we have clarity we can sit down and start talking."
The verdict

It is no surprise to see that Cowley is wanting to keep hold of a player of Simpson’s experience and quality, with the defender having been one of the key players in the side in terms of helping the club start to pick up points on a consistent basis and climb the Championship table.

The 33-year-old’s arrival might not have been the glamorous addition, but the Terriers were needing a player who knows how to pick up points and see games out, and Simpson has certainly added that quality to the squad and given the club a platform to ensure they stay up.

Were Huddersfield to stay up then Simpson could well prove to be a key player in helping the Terriers try and battle it out towards the top end of the division next season, and he has experience of competing and knowing what it takes to get over the line at the top end of a league table.

Cowley will therefore be hoping to guide the club to safety as soon as possible so that he can begin to work on ensuring that players like Simpson remain at the club next term, and it will be interesting to see if he remains with the Terriers, whether he could help them climb the table next year.
