Danny Cowley makes Aiden O’Brien transfer claim after Portsmouth’s win over Wigan

Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has admitted that although he is keen to extend Aiden O’Brien’s stay at Fratton Park, he is expecting to receive competition from elsewhere for the 28-year-old’s signature.

The Irishman’s current contract is set to expire in June and thus he will become a free-agent if fresh terms cannot be agreed with Pompey.

Since joining Portsmouth on a short-term deal in the January transfer window, O’Brien has produced a number of impressive performances for the club in League One.

The 28-year-old marked his latest appearance by scoring a last-gasp winner for his side in their showdown with Wigan Athletic last night.

The Latics raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Callum Lang and Will Keane.

Following the break, George Hirst netted a quick-fire brace to level proceedings for Portsmouth.

With the game seemingly heading towards a draw, O’Brien fired a fantastic effort past Wigan goalkeeper Ben Amos to seal all three points for his side.

After this clash, Cowley made an honest admission about O’Brien’s future.

Speaking to The News about O’Brien, Cowley said: “We hope his future is with us.

“He is a really clever player, he looks after the ball so well in the final third and has a knack of scoring goals, which is not surprising because he’s technically a very good finisher.

“We certainly hope we can sign him, no doubt there will be other clubs interested in his services because since he’s come here he’s done really well.

Quiz: Have any of these 22 ex-Portsmouth players ever played for a French club in their career?

Has former Portsmouth man Romain Padovani ever played for a French club during his career?

“For us, it’s probably not the time to talk about the strategy and what we need to do to try to get him to sign, I just know there’s a real will from us to want to sign him.

“And, having spoken to him, he is really keen to sign here as well.”

The Verdict

With both parties seemingly keen to reach an agreement, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if O’Brien does indeed stay at Portsmouth past this summer.

The former Sunderland man has shown some real signs of promise under the guidance of Cowley in recent months as he has provided five direct goal contributions in the third-tier.

Currently averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.63 in a Portsmouth shirt at this level, O’Brien will be keen to take his game to new heights next season by improving his consistency at this level.

In order to fend off potential competition from elsewhere for O’Brien, Pompey ought to be looking to make a breakthrough in terms of negotiations immediately after their final game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.
