Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley has admitted that he is hoping that the club will be able to secure the services of a winger this week.

Whereas Pompey are currently able to turn to the likes of Michael Jacobs and Ronan Curtis for inspiration in this position, they are on the lookout for a replacement for Marcus Harness who sealed a move to Ipswich Town last month.

Portsmouth made an encouraging start to the new term on Saturday as they sealed a point in their showdown with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls opened the scoring in this clash before Connor Ogilvie levelled proceedings in the second-half.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru briefly restored Wednesday's advantage by firing past goalkeeper Josh Griffiths.

Undeterred by this setback, Portsmouth equalised via a header from Jacobs and then took the lead at Hillsborough as Colby Bishop marked his competitive debut for the club with a goal.

Dele-Bashiru rescued a draw for Wednesday in the closing stages of the clash as he scored his second goal of the afternoon.

Following Portsmouth's meeting with the Owls, Cowley opted to share a transfer update.

Speaking to The News, Cowley said: "It's crucial to find a winger, we've got to remember what we've lost, and, for us, it's always to try to get better and improve.

"It's never easy to get better when you lose some of your best players - and that can happen.

"Within your armoury, you would always want some pace and some ball-carrying quality, particularly when you are away from home and have to turn defence into attack.

"I hope we can get a winger this week.

"It would be nice to get one."

The Verdict

Whereas Portsmouth did manage to show some real signs of promise at the weekend, it is hardly a surprise that they are aiming to secure the services of a winger in the coming days.

When you consider that Harness provided 41 direct goal contributions at this level for Pompey during his time at the club, Cowley will need to sign an individual who is capable of filling the void left by the 26-year-old.

Providing that Cowley is able to nail his recruitment, there is no reason why Portsmouth cannot push on in League One under his guidance.

Set to face Lincoln City at Fratton Park this weekend, it will be interesting to see whether Pompey are able to make a breakthrough in their pursuit for a new attacker before this fixture.
