Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel has called it "crazy" that his side have failed to score in their last three Championship matches despite creating plenty of chances.

The German was speaking to Barnsley's website after his side suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, which meant the Tykes have now picked up just one point in their last four league matches.

Ben Watson fired home in the 56th minute at the City Ground to seal all three points for Forest but Luke Thomas, Dani Pinillos and Mallik Wilks all missed major chances for Barnsley over the course of the match.

The result left Barnsley sitting in the Championship relegation zone having failed to win since the opening day of the season, but Stendel believes his side have created enough chances to warrant better results.

“In our last three games, we had more chances to score than in our first four games before but we’ve not scored a goal – this is crazy, but it’s reality,” Stendel told club website.

“We tried to change the result and I can say that I’m proud of this performance and attitude from my team. I hope we can get the rewards from our performance next time.”

Barnsley's next match sees them host Brentford at Oakwell on Sunday afternoon, when Stendel's side will be looking to re-discover the cutting edge which saw them defeat Fulham 1-0 back in early August.

The Verdict

Barnsley have performed much better this season than their current league position suggests, as Stendel's side have largely managed to adapt well to life in the second tier following promotion.

However, it is vital Barnsley quickly learn to capitalise on the chances they are creating as Saturday's match showed that they will be punished in what is a ruthless division.

Following a series of high-profile departures over the summer, Stendel does have a very young side at Oakwell and it is perhaps important that he uses the January transfer window to add more experience to Barnsley's ranks.

The Tykes' overall game play has suggested they are a side who look too impressive to go down, but is important they firstly become more streetwise and then recruit sensibly in January in order to climb up the table.
