Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel refused into be draw into talking about how close he may have been to taking the Huddersfield job which had been vacant.

The Terriers confirmed the appointment of former Lincoln chief Danny Cowley last week after spending weeks searching for a permanent successor to Jan Siewert.

During that time, the name of Stendel had been mentioned, with the German having a lot of admirers for the work he has done since arriving at Oakwell, which saw them win promotion to the Championship playing stylish football.

However, he made it clear when speaking to the Yorkshire Post that his focus is on the Tykes.

"I sit here today and Huddersfield has a new manager. That is all what I can say. I am the head coach at Barnsley. I am the coach of Barnsley and Huddersfield have a new coach. We are concentrating on the game on Sunday against Leeds."

He also insisted that there's no rush about sorting his long-term future with the club.

"I am happy to work at Barnsley. I think we have had a really good last 14 months. I like to work with our team and I think we will speak about the new contract at some (other) time."

The verdict

All Barnsley fans will be delighted that they managed to keep hold of Stendel as he is a top coach and has done a fine job since he came in, so losing him would have been a real problem.

Whilst his comments suggest there may have been contact with Huddersfield at one point, the main thing is that he has stayed put and is enjoying his time.

Now, the hierarchy need to show some ambition to convince Stendel to sign a new deal as he is crucial to them moving forward.
