Daniel Farke has revealed the reason Portugal international Nelson Oliveira was dropped from his Norwich City side for last night’s match with Nottingham Forest.
The 26-year old has scored just once since December and was left out of the squad for the 0-0 draw.
Speaking to the BBC, Farke explained why his big name striker wasn’t even on the bench: “In general, he knows that he’s on a pretty horrible run. I will always support and back him but I have to have the feeling that he gives everything for the team and is hungry to run and work in training.”
Norwich have struggled in front of goal this season and once again drew a blank in front of their home fans. It was their fifth draw in a row, a run of matches that has only seen them score four goals. Oliveira grabbed one of those, a late equaliser against Wolves.
Former Benfica player Oliveira has eight goals in 31 games for the Canaries in all competitions, just two behind James Maddison on ten.
Despite being the second highest scorer at the club, Farke felt he hadn’t been giving 100% on the training ground.
“My strikers and players have to improve 100% because there’s no situation after 34 goals in 35 games where we can lay back a bit and not give 100%. I didn’t have the feeling that Nelson was at his best this week – that’s the situation and why he wasn’t involved. It’s professional football and you have to deliver. When someone doesn’t deliver and they’re not there with 100% attitude I will do without them.”
Goals are the one issue stopping Norwich from progressing, the Canaries have lost just once in the last 14 games.
However, they’ve drawn eight of those games, including two FA Cup ties against Chelsea.
There could be football reasons behind the decision to drop Oliveira, but the could be a deeper issue here.
Norwich’s parachute payments end this season, with the club facing a huge change in financial circumstances.
There’s a likelihood that some of the squad will have to move on in the summer, especially now promotion is highly unlikely. Dropping the Portuguese could be the first step in moving him out of the club, along with a host of other players.
