Davies, Waghorn and Bogle were amongst the players to reply to Lawrence’s Instagram message and all three were keen to celebrate him being named the Rams’ new captain and wish him luck with the role during the 2021/22 season.

The verdict

Being named as Derby’s captain is a huge moment for Lawrence and it seems that Rooney is issuing a challenge to him and wanting him to step up and show leadership on and off the field.

The 27-year-old is at the sort of age now where he needs to start delivering consistently and being a player that the Rams can look to for inspiration on the field.

Davies has been a leader at various clubs he has played for and he will be able to give the Wales international plenty of advice regarding how to conduct himself as the new club captain.

While Waghorn and Bogle will know all about the qualities that Lawrence possesses as a team-mate having played alongside him at Pride Park.

It will be interesting to see how Lawrence adapts to the extra responsibility he has now at Derby and whether it can help him start to make more of a regular impact for them in the Championship. That might be crucial for the Rams’ hopes ahead of what is going to be a difficult campaign for them.
