Wayne Rooney’s side were always likely to be in for a tough evening at the Hawthorns against a West Brom side that started the night on the top of the Championship table.
It was vital that Derby got back towards the sort of solid foundation that had been critical to them picking up important points ahead of the international break.
That came after they had looked vulnerable at times at the back in their 2-0 loss at Birmingham City.
The decision was made by Rooney to switch to a three-man defence with Lee Buchanan moving in alongside Davies and Phil Jagielka. While a first league start was handed to Dylan Williams in the left-wing-back position.
The Rams delivered a very solid display and their defenders were all willing to put their bodies on the line and make some crucial interventions to maintain their clean sheet.
Davies was able to win nine aerial duels, make nine clearances, three blocks and he also crucially was in the right place at the right time to hook one off the line as West Brom piled pressure on Derby.
