Many Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react to Luke O'Nien's injury setback during the club's EFL Trophy clash with Lincoln City.

The Black Cats managed to seal a 2-1 victory over the Imps at the LNER Stadium as goals from Dan Neil and Stephen Wearne secured all three points in this group stage fixture.

However, Sunderland were unable to emerge unscathed from this particular showdown as O'Nien suffered a rib injury in the second-half.

Introduced as a substitute by manager Lee Johnson, O'Nien was only on the pitch for a short period of time before he had to be withdrawn.

The midfielder is now set to have an X-ray on his issue.

A stand-out performer for the Black Cats this season, O'Nien is currently averaging an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.21 in League One.

With Sunderland looking to launch a push for automatic promotion this season, they will be hoping that the 26-year-old's injury is not too serious.
