According to reports from the Northern Echo, it is “unlikely” that Dwight Gayle will depart Newcastle United for the Championship this month.
The 29-year-old has found regular game time hard to come by under Steve Bruce this season, and has started just one Premier League game for the Magpies this term.
The likes of Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Andy Carroll find themselves higher than Gayle in the pecking order at St. James’ Park, with plenty of Championship sides being linked with his signature.
Gayle is a proven forward at Championship level – he scored 23 goals to help Newcastle win the league in 2017/18, and netted 24 goals whilst on loan with West Brom last term, helping the Baggies reach the play-off semi-finals.

But the Northern Echo claims that it is “unlikely” Gayle will depart for the second tier this month, due to sides not being able to afford the reported £15m transfer fee as well as his £50,000-a-week wages.
This news will come as a major blow for Nottingham Forest, who have been repeatedly linked with the striker’s signature heading into the January transfer window.
The Reds are in desperate need of another centre-forward to provide cover for Lewis Grabban, who is currently their leading goalscorer with 14 goals to his name.
Here, then, we take a look at how Forest fans have reacted to this news on the Nottingham Forest News Facebook page…
Paul Fazza Fairley: Sooner not spend 12-15million on him, granted he’s decent at this level…. but he’s not prem class
A.S. Compton: strange, figured he would’ve taken a DIVE right in
Matt Halsall: Looks like we might need to hold onto Rafa!
Paul Garner: No! Would command too high wages & could cause unrest imo
Samuel Churchill: No I would rather have Lyle Taylor
Stuart Webb: We will take a risk on a French, Italian or Spanish league 2 player
Keith Ellington: Don’t like cheats
Tom Faulkner: Curse of the January window! Forest have history of disappointing winter windows.
