Ashley Williams has had a pretty stop-start campaign after his move to Stoke City from Everton.

The Wales international headed to the bet365 Stadium at the start of the season for a year-long loan.

His contract at Goodison Park is up in the summer, and the former Swansea City defender has insisted plans for next season are on hold while he sees out the current campaign.

Williams’ Everton deal is up in the summer, and the expiration will coincide with the conclusion of his Stoke agreement.

But as the defender focuses on important EURO 2020 qualifiers with his national team, talk of what lies ahead for him after this campaign is on the back burner.

"There have been no conversations yet," he told the Daily Mail.

"I'll sort to my own future at the end of the season. It is like any other summer where you have to make decisions.

"I'm in a position now where I'm out of contract, and I've been on loan at Stoke, we'll have to decide what I'm going to do.

“I think it would be a little bit disrespectful, in my opinion, to Stoke, to start looking into that before the loan that we agreed was up.

“I'll finish the season then see where we are at."

The verdict

There is no rush for Williams to decide his future now – he is 34, knows how football works and will take time in the summer to enjoy the off-season while his agent scouts around for a potential move.

There will be no shortage of offers for a man with vast experience like Williams.

He will just have to bide his time and see what is next in his career.

It is an important decision, as it could well be his final contract as a professional football player.
