Crystal Palace has set out to show a statement of intent this summer, with the latest transfer news suggesting that Alan Pardew's side have triggered the release clause for Newcastle United's winger Andros Townsend, according to The Guardian.

Of all of Newcastle United's squad, Andros Townsend was going to be the most difficult for Rafa Benitez to keep over the summer, as he impressed greatly in the second half of the Premier League season following his move to the North East.

Having offered Newcastle United the reported £10.5 million fee, Crystal Palace has stolen a march on a number of Premier League sides that were monitoring the England international's situation as they have triggered the release clause in Townsend's contract.

The news comes after Newcastle United were linked with a move for Bournemouth's Matt Ritchie, and it appears that Rafa Benitez will now look to bring in a high-quality wide player to replace the Premier League bound winger.

It is yet to be seen if Townsend and Crystal Palace can agree personal terms, so it is not definitive that Townsend will leave Newcastle United this summer however this news makes it look increasingly likely.

Newcastle fans, how do you feel about the news? Will you be disappointed to see Andros Townsend leave if he does agree personal terms? Is his departure inevitable?
