Crystal Palace have signed James McArthur from Wigan Athletic for a record £7 million, reports the Standard.

The Scotsman becomes the most expensive player in Palace’s history, breaking the previous record of £4.5 million, paid for striker Dwight Gayle last year.

The midfielder had looked set to join Leicester City last week, but the deal broke down after the Foxes couldn’t agree on a payment plan and later signed Esteban Cambiasso instead.

Wigan manager Uwe Rosler had hoped to keep hold of the 26-year-old but he had his heart set on a return to the Premier League.

The fomer Hamilton Academical star made 151 appearances for Wigan after signing in 2010, scoring 11 goals.

Palace manager Neil Warnock wants to sign up to four players today, with Tottenham’s Zeki Fryers set to have a medical this afternoon.  Leicester’s Chris Wood has also been linked with a move to Selhurst Park.
