Crystal Palace set to launch £7.5m bid for prolific Championship striker

Crystal Palace are set to launch a £7.5m bid for Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, subsequently dashing Newcastle’s hopes of signing him, according to the Express.

Austin, who is out of contract in the summer, has made voices about leaving, and many Rangers fans seemingly believe his intentions are to leave Loftus Road at the end of his contract.

Alan Pardew will hope to bolster his attacking ranks in January, and after the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, it is quite clear that a prolific striker is the missing piece of the jigsaw.

Whilst Connor Wickham and Dwight Gayle had undoubted quality, they are far too inconsistent to lead the line on a regular basis, and after Patrick Bamford ended his loan spell early, they are short on attacking quality.

Austin seems the perfect fit, and with his contract running out, he could easily be poached for a cut price figure, especially with fears over him departing on a free.

QPR currently sit in 16th place in the second tier, and losing Austin would be a monumental blow to Hasselbaink’s aspirations of reaching the top six of the Championship.
